Fluffy update

Tyree September 2nd, 2008

Fluffy is continuing to see improvement for the most part, but Fluffy’s foster mom is doing a high-wire balancing act with her diet. She has been trying to transition Fluffy to a raw diet but it seems that Fluffy can only take about a half raw meal before she starts having bowel issues again. So, it’s back to the drawing board (and a consultation with a homeopathic vet) for some fine tuning. We dream of the day when leakage will no longer be a problem for this little gal.

Keep those good thoughts coming her way!

Fluffy on the mend

Fluffy is slowly recovering from her recent spate of surgery. Her output has decreased since then (a blessing for her foster mom who isn’t running around with baby wipes nearly as often) but she still has not put on very much weight. On a good day, she weighs in at a waifish 13.6 pounds. Her disposition, though, could not be better. Even in her weakened state, she is playful and friendly and always ready to love on people and dogs.

Her foster mom has noticed that she has begun drinking a lot more water and urinating frequently. Because of Fluffy’s past GI history, she decided to take her in for a urinalysis and is waiting on the results. We are hoping it is not a kidney problem.

Keep those well wishes coming! Our little trooper is going to need them.

Healing thoughts for Fluffy

K-Kid Fluffy underwent intestinal exploratory/spay surgery a couple weeks ago. The resulting pathology supports a diagnosis of lymphangiectasis, an immune disorder that causes intestinal inflammation and does not allow proteins to be utilized correctly. This results in the body drawing protein from muscle and leads to subsequent weight loss and loss of muscle mass. Although not curable, it is definitely treatable and after careful deliberation, Fluffy’s foster mom decided to consult with a holistic veterinarian to determine the best course of treatment.

The vet recommended a diet consisting of one part sweet potato and two parts ground turkey along with some additional vitamins and vitamin B12 shots once a week for the next two weeks. Since starting this regimen, Fluffy’s energy level has increased and she is definitely more alert and interested in her surroundings. Although she currently weighs just a little over 13 pounds, we are hoping that this new higher protein diet will help put the weight back on her. The next couple of weeks will be a crucial period in her recovery, so please keep Miss Fluffy in your thoughts.
